Water and trough: the pair that decides mineral intake

The best formulation on the market is worth nothing if the animal never reaches the trough, or does not drink. Intake is management before it is nutrition.

The forgotten half of the sum

The formulation tells you how much the product holds per kilo. Intake tells you how much the animal actually receives per day. Only the two together say what really reached the herd, and it is always the second that drops out of the conversation when products are compared.

Intake depends little on the laboratory and a great deal on the field: where the trough sits, how many troughs there are in the paddock, whether it is covered, how far away the water is. These are decisions that cost nothing in formulation and change the whole result.

Salt governs, water follows

What draws an animal to the trough is salt. And eating salt brings thirst: mineral intake and water intake go hand in hand, neither walks alone. Touch one and you have touched the other, whether you meant to or not.

A water point that is dirty, weak-flowing, dry for part of the day or simply too far away will pull mineral intake down without anyone connecting the two. The trough stays full, and a full trough gets read as "they don't need it" when it really means "they can't get to it". Water that tastes off, brackish or muddy does the same, and that is not settled by eye: water analysis is a service you can buy, and it answers the question.

Space, distance and shade

An average intake figure for the group hides an uneven split. Where trough space is short, the dominant animals take it and the heifers and weaker cows eat the leftovers or do not eat at all. The average comes out right on paper and the group comes out uneven in the paddock. Enough trough space, well distributed, is what makes intake look similar from one animal to the next.

Position matters too. A trough on the group's natural path, near the water and the shade, gets visited; a trough in the farthest corner of the paddock gets visited by whoever has time to spare. And the ground matters: a dry spot that does not turn to mud with the first rain keeps the animals coming all year.

Routine before formulation

Mineral supplementation is daily and cumulative. Days with an empty trough are not made up by doubling the dose later: what the animal did not receive is simply gone. A cover against the rain, clearing the caked residue from the bottom, and cleaning the water point are worth more over a year than any fine-tuning of the formula.

It is also worth noting how long a bag lasts in each group. It is the cheapest thermometer on the farm. When that span shortens or stretches without explanation, something has changed: at the trough, in the water or in the herd. It is worth a look before the performance figures tell the story for you.
